Fixing potholes, improving transport

Fixing potholes is a high priority, for drivers and cyclists. Last year Leicestershire County Council resurfaced the equivalent of over 65 miles of roads, this year it will be more: the equivalent of 75 miles of roads. We recently secured £238 million of additional government funding for Leicestershire transport and I'm pressing for a substantial part of that to go towards improving the quality of our roads.

The Midland Mainline is now being fully electrified and everyone can see the pylons that have gone up from Market Harborough to Wigston. A fleet of brand-new trains that can run on electric power is being built and will start to enter service here at the end of this year, making journeys quicker and greener and nicer. I also campaigned to save our local ticket offices - which are now staying open.

I pressed local bus operators to run services on the A6 in a more cooperative way and succeeded in getting them to agree a half hourly service and the ability to use tickets interchangeably between the different bus operators. The £2 fare subsidised by the government has also helped. I am constantly pressing local bus operators to improve reliability and put on enough services to avoid overcrowding.
